Search for the Authentic Self

The search for the authentic self is at the heart of many Boomers' spiritual quests.

To learn more about this vital pursuit, we met with Dr. James Hollis, a renowned author and Jungian analyst in private practice in Houston, Texas. Dr. Hollis' most recent book is Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life.

Kripalu yoga teacher and Senior Scholar in Residence Stephen Cope has studied yoga for many years. But in midlife, his practice is changing. Here is his advice on how to adapt your yoga practice as the years go by. Then listen to the other side of Stephen Cope ? his music! Cope gave up his piano studies in his youth but has rediscovered the joys of the keyboard in his fifties. Take a look...and a listen!

Pathways to the Sacred

Mikveh is a "ritual bath" used for immersion in a purification ceremony within Judaism. In contemporary times, it is used by Jewish women to achieve ritual purity. Immersion in a mikveh is also required during a traditional conversion to Judaism.

We visited a mikveh in Newton, Massachusetts--Mayyim Hayyim--with author Anita Diamant (The Red Tent), a member of a group of women who worked together to make the mikveh possible.

Mayyim Hayyim's mission statement sums up the rationale behind the creation of this mikveh:"To reclaim and reinvent one of our most ancient Jewish rituals - immersion in the mikveh - for contemporary spiritual uses and to make this new, sacred space open and accessible to all Jews in the Greater Boston area".

Boomers! producer Paul Stern visited with Alexander Shaia, Ph.D. at his Blue Door Retreat in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Through scholarship and practice, Alexander intergrates east/west spirituality, Catholicism, and world myths with social activism and on-going awareness.

Sandplay therapy is a psychotherapeutic tool used with adults and children. The technique was developed by Swiss Jungian analyst and Christian-Buddhist practitioner, Dora M. Kalff. It consists of the client's creation of a three-dimensional picture using miniature figures in a tray of sand in the protective presence of a trained practitioner. See an example in the video sample.
