Planting the First Seeds

First Lady Michelle Obama is a revolutionary! She's leading the way to a new American diet, one that's organic, local and healthy.

By bringing children into the White House garden to harvest the early veggie crop and to help cook their own lunch this week, Michelle Obama is inspiring others to look at the health implications of our national food policies.

She pointed out that nearly one third of our children are obese and that roughly the same percentage will eventually have diabetes. She said "those numbers are unacceptable." She called for new menus and food sources for school lunch and breakfast programs, where many American kids get most of their daily nutrition.

It's so heartening to see a First Lady who sees the crisis we're in and who will be a big influence in reaping a healthier, more promising future for our nation. Go Michelle!

I think it is absolutely wonderful that our First Lady is aware are children are bombarded with all kinds of non-nutritous selections in schools where they are supposed to be education about health and fitness. This is a good thing our First Lady is promoting and a great step forward not just for our children, but for us as adults as well. When we feel better, we respond better, self -esteem goes up, redirection is more receptive, and are minds become sharper. Many of us as adults learned for watching out parents eat all sorts of unhealthy foods and as we became adults, we simply followed those same patterns. Our goal as parents, leaders and teachers is to promote overall health in the lives of the young who will one day care for us, and we must teach them now to transition into a healthier living experience and learn that choosing well in what we consume will promote other healthier choices in other areas of our lives; the friend we choose, the education we expect and demand, the societial frame work of our very lives begins to take on a different and positive form. Positive choices will no longer be a task but a welcomed choice. Thank you for this opportunity to respond to this blog.
