The Highwaymen - Flashback to the Sixties
by Nancy Fernandez Mills
Mark and I took a trip down memory lane last night and reconnected with our (very) early roots in folk music at Arlo Guthrie's church in Housatonic in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts last night. While cellist Yo Yo Ma was thrilling thousands sitting on the grass at Tanglewood under a clear, star-studded August sky, Mark and I sat at cafe tables inside the old church that you might remember from the Alice's Restaurant film. It was packed with a bunch of other Boomers listening to the Highwaymen, the group whose number one early 60's hit was "Michael Row the Boat Ashore." Wow, that was a long time ago, culturally as well as by calendar years!
The best thing about the concert was the energy and 49-year friendship of the Highwaymen. While the members have gone on to great careers (one was an academic, one a bank V.P., one a Hollywood music producer and the fourth is a federal judge), all obviously still love music, love performing and love each other.
What a great role model for the Boomers! The so-called Silent Generation is filled with people like this, trailblazers who are talented, vital and still going strong. What fun to see them in action and to be reminded that the best might yet be to come!
We all stand on the shoulders of those who come before us. Thanks to creative and energetic men and women in their sixties, seventies and beyond, we all have more hope and more inspiration as we attempt to create our own destinies.

Speaking of 60's nostalgia and flashbacks, I just ran across a website called http://www.BoomersWithAttitude.com that offers cool T-shirts and other apparel that exclusively focuses on Baby Boomers. Each T-Shirt includes a funny, nostalgic, insightful, or slightly "spicy" message on the back. Would make a unique Father's Day gift! Check it out! Hope you enjoy ...
